About the app…Nike Run Club is a running app used by runners at all levels. On this app, you can set goals for your run with distance, time, or speed. It has a gps function where it can track your run and provide run stats. On top of that, there are guided runs in which a coach motivates you through your run. There are also workout plans if you’re trying to prepare for marathons, half marathons, you name it! There is also a social component to this application where you can add your friends and challenge each other to reach certain goals

The Challenge…was to add a new feature to this application. I had thought of numerous features that could be useful to add to this application but couldn’t narrow it down so I started with User interviews to guide my process.

The main social aspect of Nike Run Club is adding your friends, creating challenges and viewing the leaderboards with those friends. Other than that, the social aspect of the Nike Run Club app is lacking.

Asics RunKeeper and Map My Run are the most similar apps to Nike Run Club. They both have similar functions in which you can track your run, get stats on your run, and share your progress with friends on the application. Both also include workout plans that users can follow to train for races. Both have social features but are limited to seeing your friends activities and setting challenges.

Run Go is inclusive of the features that the two previously mentioned apps provide but lacks workout plans. Run go has a group tab where you can see nearby running groups but the only feature within those groups is the routes they created. There wasn’t much interaction with groups and the users on the app.

Foot Path is more so an indirect competitor, mainly used to create routes for running, hiking, and biking. However, features are quite limited on the free version of the app. With the free version, users are only able to create up to five routes but tracking and navigation aren’t included with those routes. There are social features within this app but mainly to share routes with friends.

The solution… I bounced around ideas of adding a function to create a run route. After doing my research and seeing that run groups are so useful and motivating for runners, adding a feature where users can follow nearby run groups and create their own was an easy solution.

The development…begins with creating user flows and task flows to map our design and then on to low fidelity, mid fidelity and high fidelity screens.

The journey… begins with the user journey through user flows with all possible interactions the user may have with the current application.

The High Fidelity Prototype… includes the three task flows I wanted to test in usability testing. The screens below consist of the following: following a run group, creating a run group, and posting an update on your created run group.

Usability testing… It’s finally time to test the fruit of your labor. This is one of my favorite parts of UX/UI Design.

In terms of success metrics, usability testing went very well and the design was a success. However, there were a few recommendations provided by the users to help improve the product.
3/5 Users recommended that the Community label should have a different name to more easily identify the new feature (run groups).

Design is an ongoing process.. and no project is truly complete. With the results of usability testing, it provides me with the opportunity to make improvements to the product.
